Civil Works
The civil works component is important under SSA. Under this component, there is massive investment upto the limit of 33% of the total project budget. Provision of school infrastructure helps in providing access to children, and also helps in their retention, both of which are important objectives of the SSA. Provision of infrastructure for Resources Centres at sub-district levels helps in creating academic support, which acts as a catalyst towards quality improvement. The following constructions are under taken under civil works.
- Construction of Child Friendly Class Rooms
- Construction of BRCs
- Construction of CRCs
- Construction of Toilets
- Construction of Seperation Walls
- Drinking Water facilities
- Construction of Compound Walls
- Electrification

Civil Work is an important component of SSA. Under Civil Works, construction of BRCs, CRCs, additional
classrooms, toilets, drinking water, classroom separation and boundary walls are taken up. An overall analysis
would show that during the period 2002-2003 to 2007-2008 against the approved construction of 7 BRCs 1
were completed. The remaining 6 are in progress. Similarly against the approved 218 Cluster Resource Centres,
140 Centres were completed. During the period 2002-2003 to 2007-2008, 448 additional classrooms were sanctioned of which 258 were completed, the remaining are in progress and will be completed during 2008-
2009.
As regards the implementation of major Civil Works, Governments ordered that they were to be implemented by the Local Self Governments under SSA norms. The progress of implementation was rather slow beginning from 2006-07 onwards. The minor Civil Works like toilets drinking water units, compound walls, classroom
separation walls and electrification continued to be implemented by the District Project Officers through PTAs as earlier. Major headway was made that out of 1312 toilets sanctioned all units were completed. In the case of drinking water facility also all sanctioned units were completed. In the case of all minor works all units sanctioned were completed fully.
