Innovative Activities
The innovative programmes implemented in schools are acting as a catalyst in the process of achieving useful and relevant elementary education for all children in the 6-14 age group and to bridge social, regional and gender gaps in the active participation of the community. The programmes are successful in creating interest in students on education and helped to retain their studies.
The schemes implemented under Innovative Schemes are:
1. Early Childhood Care and Education
2. Girls Education
3. SC/ST Education and
4. Computer Education
Early childhood Care & Education (ECCE)
To improve the capacity of Anganwadi and pre-primary teachers in handling classes in ECCE centres in child friendly manner, enpowerment of Anganwadi workers and pre-primary teachers, supply of teaching and learning materials, orientation programme to mothers are conducting in these centres.
There are 30,000 Anganvadies in Kerala - strengthening of Anganvadies wise given focus. Capacity building of Pre-primary teachers and Anganvadi.Workers were conducted during 2007-2008. During the reporting period,14215 Anganvadi Workers were given training. This was done in convergence with Social Welfare Department, Education Department, Child Development Centre and other NGOs. Also 450 pre-primary schools run by PTAs was covered. Toys and kids were provided to 2176 Anganvadis and pre-primary schools
SC/ST Education
The educational needs of children belonging to the SC/ST is a special focus in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. SC/ST population concentrated pockets were given special attention. Though the enrolment at the LP and UP stage was almost on par with the general category, problem was retention of SC/ST girls after completion of elementary education. The development in all respects of life has not yet been brought to the expected levelsThe activities implemented in this direction were :-
- Community Mobilisation.
- Parental awareness through Sahavasa Camps.
- Remedial coaching was given to 42410 children through a net work of 640 centres.
- Utilising the provisions under SC/ST education, in each BRC cycle clubs were organised.
- Counselling Centres and personality development clubs were organised in 3260 schools.
- Girls and recreation clubs were organised in schools.
Computer Aided Learning
Learning with the help of computers enhance the quality of education . For joyful learning experience development of interactive experience development of interactive multimedia educational CDs, preparation & Distribution of self instructional materials, supply of hardware in schools are the major activities carried out under computer aided learning. Computer Education Programme implemented in SSA is not computer literacy but computer aided learning
process. As a first step in the process all DIETs were provided with 10 computer each to cater the needs of training. During 2002-2003 to 2007-2008, 1181 computers were installed in UP schools. Over and above the computers installed by SSA in schools the Local Self Government Institutions funds and MLA funds were deployed
in installing computers in UP schools. As on 31-03-2008 there were 74 computers installed in UP Schools.
During 2007-2008 massive scale of training was implemented to teachers, SSA personel and DIETs. The DIETs trained about 11501 persons, and IT@School project trained 33117 teachers with five days duration. There are some problems in up keep, maintenance and utilisation of computers.
Girls Education
The educational scenario of girls is unique that
girls enrolment constituted 49.5 percent of total
enrolment in the School Education Sector. In the
higher education sector girls enrolment is 52.5
percent. The enrolment of girls from Standards
1-VIII represented 18.38 lakh girls out of the total enrolment of 37.82 lakh students. The proportion of girls enrolment in LP/UP level stood
at 100% percent to the age group 6-14.
