IEDC (Integrated Education for Disabled Children)
The Education Policy 1986 and Modified Education Policy 1992 places greater emphasis on education of children with special nees. The enactment of Peoples with Disabilities Act (PWD Act) was a land mark in planning for the development of children with special needs. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan gives special thrust for the education of CWSN. Zero Rejection Policy is the goal of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
During 2007-2008, 1.32 lakh children were identified through survey as children with special needs. But the
achievement of coverage was marginally lower as reflected in the relevant placed. The major activities of
implemented during 2007-2008 are briefly summarised below:
- There are 152 Block Resource Centres in Kerala. In each BRC 3 Resource Teachers were made in position. The Resource Teachers assisted the classroom transactions process joining with regular school teachers. An assessment made revealed that the resource teachers work made good impact in improving the classroom transaction process.
- During 2007-2008, 86296 regular teachers were given two day training under the teacher training head.
- The Resource Teachers were given 20 days intensive training in 5 spells at 4 days duration each. The training included curriculum adaptation handling up children with special needs and other related areas.
- Home based tuition to the most difficult disabled during 2007-2008 covered 2162 children. Resource Teachers regularly visited the houses of those children twice in a week and implemented minimum level of education.
- During 2007-2008 assistive aids were distributed to 29000 children.
- The BRC Centres (Resource Rooms) were equipped with more equipment teaching, learning and demonsration facilities to children and parents. The parents and children visited the centres during holidays which was a major landmark. Under IED funds, more than 8000 schools were provided assistance construction of rail and ramps.
- Adapted toilets were constructed in 376 schools.
- The parental awareness programmes were conducted once in every 3 months. All the 1385 clusters had 4 parental awareness meetings during 2007-2008.In each meeting 22-25 parents attended. More than1.3 lakh parents attend the meeings.
