Through these different stages of its evolution into the present form Kottayam was famous as thriving business location as well as a center of education. The term ‘ angady’ which was suffixed to its name proves that the district with its accessibility to the Vembanad backwaters was a famous center of business.
The arrival of Christian missionaries in the 19th century and the foundation of Schools and colleges in the town of Kottayam inaugurated a new era in the history of the educational progress of the district and it showed the way to the rest of the State the missionaries also started printing process in Kottayam . And there onwards, till the date, the district capital remains the printing capital of the state. All the famous News papers and publishing houses in the state have their officers here.
A number of famous churches and temples add to the colour and glory of the district. The Vaikom temple is,famous for the Vaikom satyagraha and Ettumannoor and Thirunakara temples are famous and important both religiously and historically. So are the Manarcadu, Kuravilangadu and Bharananganam churches in the district of Kottayam.
