Pathanamthitta District came to reality on Ist November 1982, constituting the regions of Idukki, Alappuzha and Kollam districts. The official declaration as the 13th district came on 30th June 1983. The district is rich in her educational heritage.In olden days there were several Buddhist Study Centres in and around Kodumon, a Panchayath in this district. It is presumed that the regions presently under the district were formerly under the Pandalam reign which had connections with the Pandya Kingdom.
The total area of the district is 2642 sq.Kms, of which 1390 sq.Kms come under forest. Pathanamthitta district having 5 Taluks, 68 villages, 9 Blocks ,3 Municipalities and 54 Panchayaths comprises a total population of 1234016 of which 589308 are males and 644618 are Females.
